2022 could only end in one way. With a win, but also with our hearts in our mouths until the 96th minute. With the league season coming to a halt until January, the year has finished with three vital, fantastic and hard-fought points. It finished 3-2 to Inter against Atalanta in Bergamo, a result that sees the Nerazzurri pull away from today’s opponents in the league and move on to 30 points after 15 games. On his 250th Serie A appearance, Edin Dzeko made a crucial contribution, bagging a brace in a match that saw Palomino score and both ends and Onana make some important saves in the Nerazzurri goal.
With Toloi having picked up an injury in the warm-up, Palomino took his place in the Atalanta starting line-up and would go on to be heavily involved in a match that the hosts started in aggressive fashion. Indeed, Gasperini’s side went man-to-man all over the pitch, playing with a really high press. It was enough to prevent Inter from putting any kind of dangerous moves together, at least in the first 30 minutes. In the opening period, Onana excelled, denying Koopmeiners and then Palomino with two excellent stops. However, he couldn’t do anything about Lookman’s 25th-minute penalty, which had been awarded for a foul by de Vrij on Zapata.
However, Inter’s response was not long in coming. Like a great team, Inzaghi’s men went up a couple of gears and started to force Atalanta back. Dimarco was a constant thorn in the side of La Dea, who had come into the game on the back of two consecutive defeats and looked anything but assured at the back. Inter were filling the opposition penalty area well and equalised after 36 minutes: Calhanoglu’s cross was flicked on by Lautaro and Dzeko was able to beat Musso from close range. A vital goal that gave the Nerazzurri real energy.
The second half was full of bursts forward, starting with Dumfries’ run shortly after the restart. Inter continued to up the tempo and really started to overwhelm their opponents. A goal was very much in the air and, after an opportunity for Mkhitaryan, it arrived through Dzeko, who bundled home Dimarco’s ball in despite Maehle’s best efforts to keep it out (56’). With Atalanta on the ropes, the Nerazzurri kept pushing and added a third: Lautaro headed on Calhanoglu’s corner and Palomino diverted into his own net to make it 3-1 to Inter (61’).
The Nerazzurri were looking really good as they tried to kill off the match. However, Atalanta managed to muster a response through their changes, with Hojlund becoming an important reference point in the attacking third. Palomino made amends by nodding home in the 77th minute, meaning Inter had to do it the hard way. The Nerazzurri dug in and fought hard right until the 96th minute. Onana gratefully claimed Koopmeiners’ header as Inzaghi’s side secured all three points. 2022 is now over, and it’s finished with a win. Forza Inter!
