MILAN – Inter's 2021/2022 campaign season came to an end with a 3-0 win over Sampdoria at San Siro on Sunday. After winning the Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia against Juventus, they finished second in the league with 84 points.
Commenting on Sunday's performance and the season as a whole, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said: "The main feeling is one of great pride. Today was a special day, from the moment we arrived at the stadium the fans welcomed us and greeted us in an incredible way. Huge credit to this group; it was an excellent season that could have become extraordinary. The applause we got at the end from the fans in the stadium was truly exceptional.
"We end the league season with 84 points: that's a great haul, so I congratulate the boys. There were a few we dropped and looking back I think about the period around the two-legged tie against Liverpool, which affected our season. We certainly had a great run; we won big trophies and got to the round of 16 in the Champions League. Nobody likes to finish second but last July I would never have imagined this. Of course, there is a sense of bitterness, because we ended the season with nine wins in the last 10 league games.
"Our congratulations go to Milan – it was a good duel. We met four times in the season, we beat them in the cup. Credit to them. Last July no one thought Inter would reach this point, but by November they were calling us favourites – that's testament to the work these players, myself, my staff and everyone has done. We have played beautiful football – we have always created a lot. I recognise myself in this style of play and in this team."
Commenting on the future, the coach added: "We will meet with the president and the club in the coming days to talk about the future of this team: we have fans who deserve more to cheer about. The hope is to kick on as best we can."
