MILAN – Inter’s season came to a close with a 3-0 victory over Sampdoria, with captain Samir Handanovic taking the opportunity to look back on the highs and lows since August.
“We’ve won two trophies and reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Unfortunately, we came unstuck in the league because we dropped some points on the way. They [AC Milan] were better. The league table doesn’t lie over 38 games.
“It’s very disappointing today, but the league is over now and we have to accept the way it’s gone and look ahead. I’d replay that month in which we played the two-legged tie against Liverpool. We went toe to toe with them, but when you lose these games, it can take a lot out of you physically and mentally.
“We’ve improved as a team and we’ve played some great football. We’ve worked hard and it’s a shame the way it’s finished in the league, but we’ve played 52 games, which is a huge number. We’ve always given everything and that’s key. I’m proud of the squad and these players. We have to keep going in the same vein. I’m ready for another season.”
The captain wanted to finish up by thanking the San Siro faithful: “I’m proud of our fans. We thank the whole stadium for the entire season, not just today. The fans have always got behind us in numbers. They’ve pushed us forward and supported us, even through the difficult periods. The connection between us and them will make it easier to bounce back. A huge thank you to the supporters. I’m sorry we’ve not quite managed to repay them for their love with another trophy.”
