MILAN – At 18:00 CEST this Sunday the Nerazzurri are back in action at San Siro in what will be Serie A Matchday 38 of the 2021/22 season. Title-chasing Inter conclude their campaign by facing Marco Giampaolo's Sampdoria side who currently sit 15th in the league standings.
After drawing against Sampdoria 2-2 away from home earlier on in the season the Nerazzurri will have a chance of claiming all three points this time around. Here's everything you need to know about this weekend's match.
130TH SERIE A SHOWDOWN
Inter and Sampdoria have played each other 129 times in Serie A. Out of these matches the Nerazzurri have won 70, drawn 38, and lost 21 times.
Inter have beaten Sampdoria on more occasions than any other Serie A team, while also scoring 238 goals across these 129 encounters, another feat no other Italian side has accomplished. The Nerazzurri have won seven of their last nine games against Sampdoria, drawing and losing the other two.
In each of the last six Serie A matches between these two teams there have been at least three goals scored, out of a total of 23, with both sides getting on the scoresheet. Out of these six games Inter have won four and drawn one, while Samp have claimed one victory.
PAST ENCOUNTERS
The last time Sampdoria won at San Siro against Inter was on 3 April 2017 and was the only time in the last 19 games that the Nerazzurri have been beaten by Sunday's opponents at home. Across this period Inter have won 13 matches and drawn five times.
Sampdoria have struck on each of their last six visits to the Meazza against Inter in the league but ultimately fell to defeat on all but one of these occasions.
The last time Inter didn't score at home in Serie A whilst playing Sampdoria was on 20 February 2010, a game which ended all-square at 0-0. Since then the Nerazzurri have scored 22 times in the last 10 games, an average of 2.2 goals per game.
FORM BOOK
Inter have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions, drawing the other game. For the second time in their history the Nerazzurri have scored at least 80 goals in three consecutive Serie A campaigns. The last time they achieved this was between 1948/49 and 1951/52, a four-season streak.
Meanwhile Sampdoria have picked up seven points in their last four matches, winning twice, drawing once, and losing on two occasions. That's a better points total than the nine league games prior to this run, in which they won twice and lost seven times.
Sampdoria have won only one of their last ten away Serie A matches, losing seven in the process. This victory came against Venezia back in March, a 2-0 triumph.

The Nerazzurri have the highest number of attacks from long balls in this Serie A season (82) whereas no side has fewer than Sampdoria, who alongside Cagliari have registered 32. Inter and Sampdoria are two of the top four teams in terms of number of crosses made: the Nerazzurri have played 543, while Sampdoria have made 495. Meanwhile, Fiorentina and Empoli have 550 and 508 respectively.
Inter have scored 19 headers this season, more so than any team in Europe's top five leagues. Only three other teams have broken the barrier of 20 headed goals in Serie A since Opta started recording this statistic: Fiorentina in 2005/06 (21), Juventus in 2008/09 (20) and Inter in 2019/20 (20).
Inter have registered an average of 22 touches in the opponents box this campaign; no other team in Europe's top five leagues has recorded such an impressive stat aside from Bayern Munich, followed closely by Manchester City and Liverpool (21).
PLAYER FOCUS
Edin Dzeko has scored seven times against Sampdoria in Serie A, three of which have come in home games. Only against Atalanta (seven) and Bologna (seven) has the Bosnian struck more goals in the Italian top flight.
Lautaro Martinez, who has plundered goals in three of his last four meetings with Sampdoria in Serie A, could become the third Argentine - excluding players who went on to change nationality - to score at least 22 times in Serie A for Inter, following in the footsteps of Diego Milito and Mauro Icardi. No other player in Serie A has scored more goals than Inter's number 10 since the start of March - registering 10 strikes - while Ivan Perisic has provided seven assists, more so than any other player in the division.
Ivan Perisic's first-ever Serie A goal came against Sampdoria, way back in October 2015 at the Ferraris. Since 2004/05 when Opta started counting assists the Croat winger has scored 35 goals and provided 35 assists in Serie A (48 goals and 37 assists in all competitions).
Alexis Sanchez has scored four Serie A goals against Sampdoria, among of which was a brace in the second match of last season, on 8 May 2021. This makes Sampdoria the Chilean's joint most preferred opponent for goalscoring, alongside Cagliari and Palermo.
Nicolo Barella has provided more assists in Serie A 2021/22 than any other midfielder, while out of Europe's top five leagues only Christopher Nkunku (12) boasts a better record. The Italian is currently tied on 11 with Dejan Kulusevski.
Since Opta began recording Serie A assist stats back in the 2004/05 season no Inter player in a single season has provided more assists than Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella, both of whom have 11 so far.
Three Inter players used to play for Sampdoria. Andrea Ranocchia featured 14 times for the club in 2015/16, Milan Skriniar made his Serie A debut for the Ligurians in April 2016, and Joaquin Correa also played 31 times for Sampdoria.
Stefan de Vrij has scored three goals against Sampdoria, more so than any other opponent. The last occasion on which he scored in Serie A, back in January 2021, also came against this opponent. Danilo D'Ambrosio also shares a three-goal record against Sunday's opposition, having also struck three times against Bologna.
