Inter ran out 4-2 winners over Empoli at San Siro to move up to 78 points in the league standings. The Nerazzurri made a slow start and fell behind after 5 minutes when Andrea Pinamonti opened the scoring. The visitors thought they had bagged a second just a few minutes later, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Simone Inzaghi’s side was then awarded a penalty which was subsequently overturned, but Empoli doubled their lead through Kristjan Asllani on 28 minutes.
Inter were not disheartened by the scoreline and got back into the game on 40 minutes when Simone Romagnoli diverted the ball into his own net from a stinging Federico Dimarco cross. Before the first half came to a close, Hakan Calhanoglu sent in a cross to Lautaro Martinez that the Argentine converted brilliantly to restore parity.
In the second half, Inter laid siege to the Empoli box and the pressure finally told on 64 minutes when Lautaro smashed a bouncing ball into the back of the net with a right-footed strike. The goal sent the San Siro crowd into raptures, with the team able to see out the game and add breathing room in stoppage time when Alexis Sanchez netted Inter’s fourth goal of the evening.
