— Apr 10th 2022Analysis of the 2-0 win over Verona
After their win at Juventus last week, Inter racked up a second consecutive win in Serie A by beating Hellas Verona 2-0 at San Siro, thanks to goals from Nicolo Barella and Edin Dzeko. The victory takes Simone Inzaghi's team to 66 points and was earned with a display of personality and class from the Nerazzurri, who attacked from the first minute and maintained control after taking a two-goal lead.
KEY DETAILS
The 2-0 win over Verona showcased Inter's ability to attack from the early stages of the game and then play a more controlled match after the interval. Hellas actually had more possession during the 90 minutes, which was due to the first 15 minutes of the second half when, trailing by two goals, Igor Tudor's team tried to change the game, adopting a more attack-minded approach.
Inter dropped deeper in the second half, having pushed up more aggressively the first 45 minutes. During the match they had 18 shots on the goal guarded by Lorenzo Montipò, the visitors' man of the match.
The home side were more dangerous on the counter than in their build-up play, with a danger index of 70.6% for counter attacks and 61.8% for the latter. This statistics highlights Inter's ability to harness its sprinters. Joaquin Correa led several breaks in the first period, while Ivan Perisic and Denzel Dumfries were constantly going up and down the flanks. Dumfries reached a speed of 33.49 km/h, compared to 32.19 km/h for Perisic. As well as showing great pace, Inter players covered a lot of ground, with Marcelo Brozovic running 12.3 km during the game.
Nor was it solely about attack, as Inter kept an 14th clean sheet of this league season.
PERISIC SHOW: DOUBLE ASSIST
Perisic found himself playing two different roles during the match. First he was on the left flank, then he shifted into attack to support Edin Dzeko. The Croatian laid on two assists: the first was a left-footed cross for Barella, the second a flicked header for Dzeko. The last time he produced two assists in the same game was in the 3-0 win over Milan in February 2021.
Perisic now has 34 assists for Inter in Serie A. Only Maicon (42) and Dejan Stankovic (39) have more for the club since 2004/05 (when Opta began collecting such data).
BARELLA UP TO THREE GOALS
Nicolò Barella opened the scoring on Saturday, taking his haul this season to three. He has equalled his tally of last season, in which he played 36 games, after 29 appearances. The midfielder now has three goals and 10 assists in the league, with all three goals coming at San Siro.
DZEKO REACHES 98 SERIE A GOALS
Edin Dzeko is closing in on a Serie A century. The Bosnian's goal to make it 2-0 against Verona brings his tally to 98 in the Italian topflight. Only Ciro Immobile (149) has scored more goals than him in the league since his debut in 2015/16.
Dzeko has 13 goals for Inter in the league, of which nine have come at San Siro. The one against Verona came from a corner, after Federico Dimarco's corner and Perisic's flick-on. Inter have scored 10 goals from corners in the league, with Roma the only side to have more this season (11).
INTER CONTINUE STREAK AGAINST VERONA
Inter and Juventus are the two teams against which Verona have played the most away games in Serie A without winning. In 31 away league matches against Inter, they have drawn 10 and lost 21.
The Nerazzurri have not lost in 22 consecutive games against Verona in the league (18 W, 4 D). The last team against which the team recorded such a long undefeated streak in Serie A was Cesena (22 games reached in 2015).
The first goal of the match, scored by Barella, was Inter's 100th against Verona in Serie A.
