InterNationals: Vidal and Sanchez in action for Chile
Team
— Mar 25th 2022Qualification balanced on a knife edge following heavy defeat to Brazil
The World Cup qualifiers in South America are going to go right down to the wire. Last night, in the penultimate round of matches in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal's Chile were beaten 4-0 by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. Both Inter players played the full 90 minutes at the Maracana as Neymar, Vinicius Junior, Philippe Coutinho, and Richarlison all got on the scoresheet.
While Brazil had already sealed qualification Chile were still battling to reach the World Cup, and this defeat sees them slip to seventh in the group standings. The only chance La Roja have of making Qatar 2022 is by climbing up to fifth place which would see them make the play-offs. In order to achieve this they would have to beat an already qualified Uruguay and hope that both Peru and Colombia don't win their games against Paraguay and Venezuela. These fixtures take place at 1:30 CET next Wednesday.
As mentioned, Uruguay - missing Mathias Vecino - have already qualified for the World Cup after beating Peru 1-0.
