— Mar 21st 2022Wishing the German Ballon d’Or winner many happy returns
MILAN – Lothar Matthaus, who played for Inter between 1988 and 1992, turns 61 today. During his four seasons with the club, the number 10 scored 53 goals in 153 appearances, in which his power, technique and leadership qualities shone through. During his first season in Serie A, he led the team to the record-breaking 13th Scudetto title. The German’s link-up play and goals were also pivotal to the 1989 Italian Super Cup and 1991 UEFA Cup success.
“Being part of the team was so enjoyable for me and a real privilege. When we lifted the trophy, we were all thrilled. We were pleased for ourselves and for the fans. We were a strong team, but, above all, a fantastic group of lads.”
The Ballon d’Or that he claimed in 1990 was showcased at San Siro before Inter kicked off against Juventus in a game that the Nerazzurri won 2-0, thanks to a goal by none other than Matthaus himself, in the same year when his four goals helped Germany reach the summit of global football thanks to their World Cup success on Italian soil.
The whole FC Internazionale Milano family would like to wish Inter Hall of Famer Lothar Matthaus a very happy birthday!
