PREVIOUS MEETINGS
There have been 155 league meetings between the two sides, with Inter coming out on top. The Nerazzurri have bagged 70 wins, with 36 for Torino and 49 draws. Only Juventus, with 74, have more victories in Serie A against il Toro. More recently in the head-to-head, Inter have won the last five league games, as well as 12 out of the last 17 away games, losing only two and drawing three.
FORM
Inter come into the game with a 5-0 win against Salernitana under their belt. They have 58 points on the board after 27 matches. On the road, the Nerazzurri have returned with three points in the last three league games, drawing against Atalanta, Napoli and Genoa. Simone Inzaghi’s side have conceded only two goals in their last eight away games in Serie A. In fact, since the start of October, no team in the top five European leagues have conceded fewer goals (six) and secured more clean sheets (six) on their travels than Inter.
Torino, meanwhile, enter the match on the back of a goalless draw against Bologna. Ivan Juric’s side haven’t come out on top in their last six league games, with three draws and three losses. The last time they went longer than this without a win under one manager was in December 2020 when Marco Giampaolo was in charge, recording an eight-game winless streak. Their record against the top sides doesn’t paint a happier picture, having lost 1-0 in each of the three games they’ve played against a top-two team this year. On a more positive note, il Toro have managed to find the net in each of the last 10 home games in Serie A, scoring 20 goals in total and averaging two per game. They haven’t topped that in one season since December 2018.
GENERAL STATS
Torino have the biggest differential (+14) between points obtained at home (24) and away (10) in Serie A this year. The fixture pits the team with the best record of coming back after going behind against the one with the worst. Inter have grabbed 17 points from a losing position while Torino have got only four.
When it comes to defending, however, only Napoli (eight) have conceded fewer goals than Torino (10) before the half-time whistle is blown, whereas Inter (nine) have the best second-half defensive record in Serie A.
PLAYER FOCUS
Lautaro Martinez has been directly involved in five goals over the last five games against Torino in the league, bagging four for himself and one assist. Only against Cagliari does he have a better record in Italian top-flight football, with seven such contributions. If the Argentinian forward were to score, he could become only the fifth Inter player (since the change of rules instating three points for a win) to hit the net in three away games in a row against one opponent. He scored on the road against il Toro on 23 November 2019 and 14 March 2021. The only other players to do so since 1994/95 are Christian Vieri (v Perugia), Álvaro Recoba (v Empoli and v Reggina), Ivan Perisic (v Fiorentina) and Mauro Icardi (v Cagliari).
For Edin Dzeko, however, the fixture has been less fruitful. Of all the teams he has faced at least 10 times, Torino is one of the three opponents, along with Lazio and Juventus, where he has been involved in fewer goals (four in total, with three goals and one assist).
Nicolò Barella has the highest number of assists in open play (nine) across the five major European leagues this year. Florian Wirtz, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Paul Pogba are right behind him on eight. He could become the first Inter player to get into double figures for league assists by Week 30 since 2004/05.
By the same metric, Hakan Calhanoglu has the most assists of any player from set-pieces, with six so far this year.
When compared to other goalkeepers with at least 25 appearances in Serie A this season, Samir Handanovic has the best percentage of saves at 77%. Vanja Milinkovic-Savic trails in second with 62% and Lorenzo Montipò comes in close behind that with 61%.
Milan Skriniar will be making 200th appearance in Serie A since his league debut on 24 April 2016 against Sampdoria. In defence, only Francesco Acerbi has played more top-flight games (205).
It was in the reverse fixture in December that Denzel Dumfries got his last league goal. Of all the defenders in the five major European leagues, he has touched the ball the most times in an opponent’s penalty area (92).
Torino are the only side against which Federico Dimarco has scored more than one goal in Serie A, with both coming in 2021 for Verona under Ivan Juric (on 6 January and 9 May).
Alexis Sánchez has got his highest number of assists against one side in this fixture, with five in six meetings. The Chilean also scored in their meeting on 22 November 2020.
It was against il Toro that Stefan de Vrij netted his first ever goal for Inter in August 2018.
Danilo D’Ambrosio, meanwhile, will be facing his former side, as he made 42 appearances and scored four league goals for Torino in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.
Matteo Darmian has also been on the other side of the pitch, playing 100 league games for them between 2012 and 2015, scoring two goals.
