LIVERPOOL - Inter return from Anfield with a win but are still eliminated from the UEFA Champions League. Defeat in the first leg and Alexis Sanchez’s untimely dismissal proved too much for the Nerazzurri to overcome in their re-match against the Reds.
Lautaro Martinez put Inter ahead on 62 minutes with a dazzling goal, shaking a Liverpool side that hasn’t lost at home for a year. However, shortly after the sensational strike, Sanchez was shown a second yellow card and Inter faced an uphill battle.
The Argentinian spoke to Mediaset about his disappointment at leaving the competition. “It’s a tough blow to take for us because we had two great games, both at San Siro and here tonight. There are a quality side, but we managed to play our own game.
“The goal that put us ahead should have given us a big boost, but unfortunately, we went down to ten men straight afterwards. In Europe, games are won and lost on these kinds of details, like what happened against Madrid. We need to improve in these areas.”
He noted how the team also paid the price for mistakes in the reverse fixture. “We had a great 70 minutes at San Siro, but then we conceded two avoidable goals. We arrived here determined. We won but it wasn’t enough. It was those crucial details that evaded us, and they are decisive in this competition.
“We work hard every day to take Inter higher and higher. We showed that today, but it wasn’t enough. Now we need to think about the league and Coppa Italia.”
