MILAN - Inter suffered their third defeat of the season, losing to Sassuolo in the 26th league game this year. The Nerazzurri missed a number of chances and were punished on the counter-attack by Giacomo Raspadori and Gianluca Scamacca in the first half, and they failed to get back into the game in the second.
Simone Inzaghi expressed disappointment with the performance in his post-match analysis: “I’m really annoyed with our approach, because we spoke about it after the game on Wednesday. Sassuolo had already won at the San Siro against Milan and in Turin against Juventus. They play well on the counter and we needed to be careful of this. We created so many chances in the second half but it didn’t go our way. We needed to approach the game differently, irrespective of the qualities Sassuolo possess and the fact that they came to the game fresher physically than us.
“We created lots of chances but couldn't get the goal to get us back in it. We also lost our shape a bit because we were trying to get back into the game. We didn’t do that and need to look into why that was. When a game doesn’t go well, we have to put it behind us because there’s another important match in four days’ time. We need to recover physically and mentally. There are 13 games left before the end of the season and we have to move forward now.”
The Nerazzurri coach spoke about the importance of the missing players but claimed this was no excuse: “We had some suspensions and injuries, but we must be more resilient in these situations. There are several teams bunched together in two or three points of the top of the league so we need to move forward. Other teams have also made mistakes. Unfortunately, we let in two goals and we don’t normally do that.”
This was the second match at the San Siro where Inter have failed to score, but Inzaghi is not concerned. “We are still the best attacking force and we create a lot of chances, so we don’t need to worry about that. These things happen from time to time. However, today we needed to do better when defending because we knew the dangers that Sassuolo could pose. If we want to win the Scudetto, we cannot go into a game the way we did.”
