MILAN - Inter fell to defeat in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 match against Liverpool at San Siro. Despite Simone Inzaghi's side putting in a great performance and dominating for large spells they were unable to convert possession into goals.
Inter were left to rue not capitalising on their positive performance when Liverpool scored from their only two attempts on goal in the 75th and 83rd minutes through Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. A painful 2-0 defeat, but the second leg at Anfield on 8 March awaits.
The Nerazzurri were fast out of the blocks, with Lautaro Martinez testing the waters with an attempt after five minutes. Liverpool threatened in dead ball situations with Sadio Mane in particular a menace. Inter's best chance of the match came in the 16th minute when an Ivan Perisic foray down the left flank led to the Croat finding Hakan Calhanoglu in the box yet the Turk's shot crashed off the underside of the bar. Meanwhile Liverpool found in Milan Skriniar and his fellow defenders an impenetrable wall.
After the break Inter had Liverpool with their backs against the wall for the first 20 minutes yet Inzaghi's side were unable to find a breakthrough. The Nerazzurri were then punished by Liverpool's front line as Firmino nodded in past Samir Handanovic from an Andrew Robertson corner kick before Salah doubled Liverpool's lead.
