Highlights: Inter 2 - 0 Shakhtar

Inter’s 2-0 success over Shakhtar Donetsk at San Siro on Wednesday evening coupled with Real Madrid’s 3-0 win away to Sheriff ensured the Nerazzurri booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

It was a strong performance by Simone Inzaghi’s side, who dominated from the first minute till the last but despite 15 first-half efforts on goal, were unable to break the deadlock before the interval due to a combination of an offside flag raised against Matteo Darmian before Ivan Perisic thought he’d put the hosts into the lead and a string of fine saves by Anatoliy Trubin in the Shakhtar goal.

It was a different story in the second half when Inter finally broke through despite another disallowed goal, this time for a push by Lautaro. Dzeko popped up with the pivotal opener in the 61st minute when he smashed the ball home after Darmian’s shot was blocked.

The Swan of Sarajevo doubled Inter’s lead just six minutes later when he got on the end of a pinpoint Perisic cross to send the San Siro faithful into raptures.
