Armando Picchi
may have passed away on 27 May 1971 but his heart still beats louder than ever – in his home town Livorno, in the memories of those who knew him and in the minds of all Nerazzurri fans, including those who never saw him play.
Picchi's charisma and leadership skills have stood the test of time and La Nazione recently decided to recount his story in Armando Picchi. Un uomo libero [Armando Picchi. A free man]. So impressive was the docufilm that Roberto Davide Papini's work has now won a Ghirlande d'Honneur award at 2021 Sport Movies & TV festival, the Milan-based international event which honours documentaries and audio-visual productions on sport.
Armando Picchi. Un uomo libero tells the story of the legendary Grande Inter captain, with numerous testimonies by people such as Massimo Moratti (who attended the ceremony), Igor Protti and Cristiano Lucarelli, among many others.
After its screening at the festival – organised by Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportif (FICTS) – the documentary was presented with the award in the Movies & TV Football Feature category.
Meanwhile another Inter documentary won a prize at the festival: Giulio Origlia's El mundo es un balon dedicated to Inter Campus took the Gentleman Fair-Play Award.
