MILAN – The 2021 Italian Super Cup is to be played at the Stadio San Siro on Wednesday 12 January 2022, with Inter – the reigning champions – taking on last season's Coppa Italia winners Juventus. The 34th edition of the Super Cup will take place in Italy for the 23rd time while the Meazza will be hosting the match for the 12th occasion.
Inter are set for their tenth appearance in the competition, having won five and lost four previously.
The Nerazzurri first featured in the Super Cup in November 1989 (the second edition) when Giovanni Trapattoni's recording-breaking Scudetto side beat Sampdoria 2-0, with Enrico Cucchi and Aldo Serena on the score sheet.
In 2000 Inter lost 4-3 to Lazio at Rome's Stadio Olimpico while in 2005 they claimed the trophy thanks to Juan Sebastian Veron's strike in a 1-0 win over Juventus at the Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin.
That was the first of seven consecutive years with Inter taking part, between 2005 and 2011.
In 2006 Roberto Mancini's side came from behind to overcome Roma 4-3 at the San Siro with goals by Patrick Vieira (2), Hernan Crespo and Figo.
The Giallorossi avenged that defeat the following year before another epic battle between the two sides ensued in 2008: after extra time ended 2-2, Inter triumphed on penalties with Javier Zanetti converting the winning spot-kick.
The treble season began with a 2-1 defeat to Lazio in Beijing while a year later Goran Pandev's goal and a Samuel Eto'o brace sealed victory against Roma.
The Nerazzurri's last Super Cup involvement came in 2011, when AC Milan ran out 2-1 winners in Beijing.
