MILAN – It was a night to remember for Stefan de Vrij as he weighed in with a goal in Inter's 3-1 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in Matchday 3 of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League.
The defender's second-half strike – the all-important third for Inter on the night – was his first European goal for the club and helped the Nerazzurri secure a first Champions League win of the season.
“It was like a final for us and I think that was clear from the way we approached the game,” the 29-year-old began. “We were desperate to win it and that's what we did.
“We had lots of dead balls and we have some great takers – we made the most of those opportunities by scoring two from set-pieces tonight. I want to thank Denzel [Dumfries] for the assist. It was a crucial moment of the game too.
“We'll enjoy the result tonight then start focusing on the next one against Juventus.”
