Inzaghi: "We take the performance and move on"

ROME – An hour of top-level football at the Stadio Olimpico was not enough for Inter to bring anything back to Milan to show for their efforts. After falling behind to Ivan Perisic's penalty, Lazio turned the game around among Inter protests.

“That was our best recent performance, but when a team like ours is a goal up, we have to manage the game better in terms of our final ball and double our lead,” explained Simone Inzaghi after the full-time whistle. 

“Unfortunately, they scored their equaliser from a corner that we shouldn’t have conceded. From that point on, the game changed and Lazio got back into the contest. The second goal was a bit strange and we lost our heads, which is something we can’t allow to happen. It’s disappointing. It’s a setback that we didn’t need in terms of our league position, but we’ll take the performance and move on.”

In terms of the incident ahead of Lazio’s second goal when Federico Dimarco was injured on the deck and the tension that ensued, the boss said, “Lautaro Martinez had his back to it and couldn’t have known that Dimarco was still down. He could’ve kicked the ball out, but I’m not going to dwell on that. When a team like Inter is playing in a game like that, we have to get a result. When you face sides like Lazio, you can’t give them a chance to get back into the match.

“We managed the contest particularly well for an hour, but we then let our opponents back into the game and paid the consequences.

“The team produced a good performance. We shouldn’t have conceded that equaliser and even at 2-1 down, we still had time to get back into it.

“It was an intense match with a disappointing end, because I saw the way the team controlled parts of the game as well as we could and should’ve killed it off.

“We should’ve been better with our final pass to make it 2-0. We have two days to analyse the match because a team like ours can’t head back home with a 3-1 defeat after a performance like that,” concluded the boss.
