Sampdoria v Inter in numbers

MILAN – Inter will return to action following the international break with a trip to take on Sampdoria at Marassi on Sunday (12:30 CEST kick-off).

The match is part of Week 3 of Serie A 2021/22, with the Nerazzurri having started the season with wins over Genoa and Hellas Verona.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS BETWEEN SAMPDORIA AND INTER

Inter and Sampdoria will face off for the 129th time in Serie A when they do battle at Marassi on Sunday lunchtime. As things stand, the Nerazzurri have the better of the head to head with 70 wins, 37 draws and 21 defeats. Inter have also won seven of their last eight meetings with Sampdoria, but lost their most recent match against Samp at Marassi (2-1 in January 2021).

Inter have beaten Sampdoria in Serie A more times than any other side (70) – and they’ve also scored more goals against the Blucerchiati than anyone else (236).

There has been a single draw in this fixture since October 2015 (a 1-1 at Marassi), with Inter winning eight and losing three since then.

Both Inter and Samp have scored in each of the last five matches between the two sides, for a total of 19 goals (an average of 3.8 per match).

MATCHES AT SAMPDORIA

Sampdoria have scored more than one goal in each of their last 14 home matches against Inter in Serie A, finding the net twice in their most recent home game against the Nerazzurri (the 2-1 win for Samp in January 2021). In their last ten Serie A away games at Sampdoria, Inter have won six, drawn one and lost three.

THE FORM BOOK

Four of the 11 headed goals scored in Serie A this season have been scored by Inter players – no team in any of Europe’s top five leagues have a better record than that, although Stuttgart have also scored four.

Inter have scored in each of their last 21 league games. They’ve only scored in more consecutive games four times in their history, most recently in 2009 (23 matches in a row). The Nerazzurri have scored at least two goals in each of their last seven matches in Serie A – something they’ve only better three times (in 1930, 1940 and 1950) in a single calendar year.

Sampdoria have one point from their first two league games of the season and are yet to score a goal. They narrowly lost by one goal to nil to AC Milan on the opening day, following this up with a goalless draw away at Sassuolo in Week 2. Sampdoria have never failed to score after three games of the season. In terms of goals conceded, Doria have kept clean sheets in three of their last four league games, which is as many as they managed in the 17 matches before that.

PLAYER WATCH

Edin Dzeko has scored six Serie A goals against Sampdoria, including three in his last three appearances against them. He has never scored seven league goals against the same side (but has found the net six times against Atalanta too).

Sampdoria are the only side that Stefan de Vrij has scored more than two Serie A goals against, with three. The Dutch defender’s last league goal came against the Blucerchiati back in January 2021.

Lautaro Martinez is in with a chance of scoring in three successive Serie A matches for the second time in his career (including his goal against Udinese on the final day of the 2020/21 season). He achieved the feat for the first time in October 2020.

Arturo Vidal’s next appearance in Serie A will be his 150th in the competition. If he makes it onto the field of play against Sampdoria, he’ll reach the milestone exactly four years and 360 days after making his 150th appearance in the Bundesliga.

Andrea Ranocchia made 14 Serie A appearances for Sampdoria in the 2015/16 season, while Milan Skriniar and Joaquin Correa both made their Serie A debut in Blucerchiati colours, in April 2016 and February 2015 respectively.
