— May 22nd 20211999: the UEFA Cup triumph after a two-legged tie against Roma. 2010: victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Two historic Inter anniversaries on this day
After full time of Inter vs. Udinese tomorrow, the team will hoist the Club's 19th Scudetto into the air. On the eve of this milestone, however, we want to celebrate two historic moments in the Club's history, which happened on this day.
30 years ago today, on 22 May 1991, Beppe Bergomi lifted the Nerazzurri’s first UEFA Cup title after a run that began with a 2-1 defeat to Rapid Wien. What followed was a series of incredible comebacks, starting with a 3-1 over the Austrian side, thanks to a Berti brace. Inter began the second round with a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa in England, before turning the tie around with a 3-0 win at San Siro. Then came victories over FK Partizan and Atalanta, before the semi-final against Sporting CP: 0-0 in the first leg, 2-0 at San Siro. A 2-0 win at the Meazza in the first leg of the final against Roma – with goals from Matthäus and Berti – preceded the celebrations at the Olimpico on 22 May 1991, as Rizzitelli’s goal was not enough and Trapattoni’s team won the first UEFA Cup title in the Nerazzurri’s history.
Exactly 19 years later, another team completed an absolutely incredible feat on a day, 22 May 2020, that Inter fans will never forget. After 45 years of waiting, the dream became reality at the Bernabeu against Bayern Munich. Diego Milito’s brilliant opener, Julio Cesar’s goals, Cambiasso’s block, El Principe’s brace and his delirious run towards the Inter end followed by the ensuing celebrations after full time. This triumph capped off a perfect season following the Coppa Italia win on 5 May and the Scudetto title on 16 May: the first and only Treble by an Italian club.
