— May 2nd 2021The extraordinary Nerazzurri triumph with four games to spare: All the statistics
Champions of Italy, for the 19th time. Here it is, the Scudetto. After Saturday's victory over Crotone and Atalanta’s draw at Sassuolo, Antonio Conte's team, with 82 points in the standings and an advantage of 13 points over their direct pursuer, have won the Scudetto with four matches still to play. Last season, when the team finished in second place and one point off the top spot, Inter had collected 82 points: the same as in this season, with four matches to play.
The nineteenth national title for Inter comes eleven years after the last triumph, in 2010, the year of the Treble. In the era of three points per win, the Scudetto is awarded with more than two games to spare for only the sixth time: it previously happened at Inter in 2006/07, when on 22 April 2007 they won Scudetto number 15 in Siena with five rounds still to be played.
For the second time in history, Inter wins the Italian championship on May 2. The first time was exactly 50 years ago. In fact, today the fiftieth anniversary of Scudetto number 11 is celebrated: here is the story of that extraordinary season, a season that also saw a comeback against AC Milan, culminating in Nerazzurri triumph.
THE NERAZZURRI'S WINNING STREAK
An exciting run-in for Antonio Conte's team. With AC Milan leading the table for 21 matchdays and with a maximum advantage of five points, Inter produced a true masterpiece from January onwards, recording eleven consecutive victories in the first eleven games of the second round (the second-best series of successes in a single Serie A season for the Nerazzurri, after 17.00 in 2006/07).
The overtaking materialised itself with the victory over Lazio on February 14 and the defeat of AC Milan at La Spezia. In general, the Nerazzurri's second round was spotless: From 29/30 January up until now, they obtained 41 points. Conte's team also opened up another streak: 13 consecutive home wins in Serie A, equalling their best ever run at home in the competition, which occurred in 2011.
INTER’S CHAMPIONSHIP CHARACTERISTICS
Reaction: no team has recovered more points from losing positions than Inter in this season’s Serie A (16, on par with Sassuolo).
Patience: Inter have scored 51 goals during the second half of this Serie A.
Clinical: Inter are the team with the highest conversion rate in Serie A this season (over 15%).
Discipline: Inter are the team that have conceded the fewest goals in the league (29).
Head: Inter have scored 14 goals from headers this season, at least two more than any other team.
Sacrifice: Inter are the team that have obtained the most wins in Serie A this season in matches when they have registered a ball possession of less than 50% (13).
THE SCUDETTO PROTAGONISTS: APPEARANCES, GOALS AND… RECORDS!
Inter have fielded 23 players in 34 matchdays in this Serie A season (here is the complete list, with appearances and statistics). It has been 17 years since a championship winning team has used as few players in their squad, since 2004.
The only Inter players who have played in all the 34 matches so far this season are Samir Handanovic and Lautaro Martinez. Among those who have collected at least 20 appearances, however, Alessandro Bastoni is the only one to have played all matches as a starter (30/30).
In the Lukaku-Lautaro combination, the Nerazzurri have found the perfect combination of power and elegance: for the first time since 1958/59, Inter have two players with at least 15 goals scored in a single Serie A season. Lukaku has 21 goals in the league (and ten assists), Lautaro has 15. In 1958/59 Eddie Firmani ended the season with 20 goals, while Antonio Angelillo scored 33. Lukaku and Lautaro have exchanged eight assists in Serie A: a connection that always works.
Lukaku, on 21 goals, has also collected ten assists: he is the first player to reach at least 20 goals and ten assists in a single Serie A season since 2004/05. He has also opened the scoring in nine matches, more than any other player.
In 2020/21, Inter have been a cooperative for goals. In fact, the Nerazzurri are the team in this season’s Serie A that have the most players with at least three goals scored (9): Lukaku, Lautaro, Hakimi, Sanchez, Skriniar, Darmian, Perisic, D'Ambrosio and Barella.
ANTONIO CONTE, MISTER SCUDETTO
Antonio Conte's percentage of victories at the helm of Inter is impressive, in fact, it exceeds 68%, with an average of 2.28 points per game. Considering all his experience with the Nerazzurri, these are the highest numbers for an Inter coach with at least 25 matches coached in Serie A. In his 72 matches with Inter, he has recorded 49 wins, 17 draws and six defeats.
Following in the footsteps of Giovanni Trapattoni, Conte wins the Scudetto with Inter after having also won it on with Juventus. Conte also becomes the first coach to win the Scudetto with more than two games to spare (he also achieved this in 2013). This is the Coach’s fourth national title in Italy: only five coaches in the history of Serie A have won as many. Giovanni Trapattoni leads the way, with 7 Scudetti, followed by Allegri (6), Lippi and Capello (5), Carlo Carcano and Antonio Conte (4).
