NAPLES - Christian Eriksen sees Napoli and he lights up. Last year, he scored directly from a corner against them. The stadium was still called ‘San Paolo’ at the time. This time around, at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, the Dane first tried to replicate his goal from last season, and then he scored a marvellous equaliser with a great strike. It was an important finish to seal a 1-1 draw.
And it was a goal truly bearing Eriksen’s trademark: a left footed shot from outside the box. Since he joined Tottenham in 2013/14, no other centre-midfielder in the Top Five European leagues has scored more goals from outside the area than Christian Eriksen (24, alongside Coutinho and Calhanoglu). The only player to have found the net on more occasions from outside the box – an attacker – is Lionel Messi, with 59.
When speaking to Inter TV after the match, Eriksen first spoke about his ability to play with both feet: “I’m undoubtedly right-footed, but I of course like to play with my left too. I've always been used to playing with both feet. You see me take free kicks on my right, but I could also take them with my left.
“We came here to win, we were a little bit unlucky in the first half, like the goal that we conceded. However, we did well to respond: we fought to get the equaliser and found it. This is an important point, one which we've picked up at a great but difficult place to play. Getting something here is important. We’ve got through one more game and are still focused on our journey.“
