He is now joint second on the all-time Inter list for goalkeepers

MILAN - Against Cagliari, Samir Handanovic made his 382nd appearance in an Inter shirt in all competitions. This is a particular landmark as the Nerazzurri’s captain drew level with legendary former Inter goalie Ivano Bordon. Handanovic joins Bordon as the goalkeepers with the second-most appearances for the Club, behind just Walter Zenga on 473.

He celebrated the milestone with a win and a clean sheet. Handanovic, now in his ninth season with the Nerazzurri, reached a total of 500 Serie A appearances in February, becoming the foreign goalkeeper with the most games played in the Italian top flight. He was voted as the best goalkeeper in the division in 2018/19 and also holds the Serie A record for most penalty saves: 25.

HANDANOVIC’S 382 GAMES FOR INTER

  • 322 games in Serie A

  • 16 games in the Coppa Italia

  • 18 games in the Champions League

  • 26 games in the Europa League

BORDON, 382 APPEARANCES AND A RECORD

Ivano Bordon, born in 1951, made his Inter debut on 8 November 1970 in a Derby that was won by AC Milan. He came on for the injured Vieri with the game at 1-0 and conceded the first goal of his career to a Rivera penalty. His first season with the first team ended with the Scudetto: nine appearances in 1970/71. He burst onto the scene during that controversial match against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the European Cup. Bordon became a hero in Berlin, saving a penalty and making a series of fabulous stops in the 0-0 draw.

Bordon was at Inter from 1970 to 1983. His trophy cabinet includes the Torneo di Viareggio in 1971, two Scudetti and two Coppa Italia titles. His second Serie A title with the Nerazzurri came in 1979/80 when Bordon set the Inter record for minutes without conceding a single goal: 686 between matchdays four and eleven.

He reached 382 appearances with Inter and then joined Sampdoria, but not before winning seven other more “alternative titles”: four Anglo-Italian Cups and the “Armando Picchi” National League Trophies.

Bordon became a world champion on two occasions: in 1982 as a player – though he didn’t play a single minute in Dino Zoff’s team at the tournament – and against in 2006 as part of Marcello Lipp’s coaching staff.
