MILAN – If you browse the photos from Torino vs. Inter on 2 February 2003, you’ll find a focused Recoba, Batistuta’s elegant movements and Vieri using his strength to create space for himself in threatening positions. Seeing these images, one of our more interesting matches against Torino springs to mind, not least because of the team selected by Héctor Cúper.
Francesco Toldo played between the sticks, while Cannavaro, Materazzi, Javier Zanetti and Pasquale formed a four-man defence. In midfield, Okan, Cristiano Zanetti and Emre provided physicality and determination. Up front, an exceptional trio consisting of Recoba, Vieri and Batistuta took to the pitch. This was an unusual move by Cuper, who didn’t usually field three forwards, but it turned out to be a successful one that day as the Nerazzurri emerged victorious. Both of Inter’s goals came about thanks to great work from Recoba, who found Vieri for the first and then left Delli Carri and Comotto chasing shadows before setting up Okan for the second.
