The facts and figures you need to know ahead of Wednesday's Coppa Italia clash

MILAN – Inter’s Coppa Italia journey will begin at 15:00 CET on Wednesday, when they’ll face Fiorentina at the Franchi at the round of 16 stage of the competition.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS

Inter and Fiorentina are set to face off in a round of 16 Coppa Italia tie for the first time. The two teams have, however, met twelve times in the competition, with the Nerazzurri’s record against the Viola reading as follows: four wins, three draws and five defeats. Inter have won their last three Coppa Italia clashes against Fiorentina after the Viola had emerged victorious in the previous two (during the 1995/96 season). The Nerazzurri’s last victory came on 19 January 2020, when they secured a spot in the semi-finals of the competition thanks to a 2-1 success.

Inter are unbeaten in their last eight games against Fiorentina in all competitions (W4, D4): the Viola’s last victory against the Nerazzurri came in April 2017, when they ran out 5-4 winners in Serie A.

In their last eight matches at the round of 16 stage of the Coppa Italia, Fiorentina have progressed on seven occasions. In the past 17 seasons, the Nerazzurri have only failed to make it to the quarter-finals once (in 2013/14 following a 1-0 defeat to Udinese).

PREVIOUS MATCHES IN FLORENCE

Fiorentina are unbeaten in their last six home matches against Inter in all competitions (W3, D3). The Nerazzurri’s last victory at the Franchi came on 15 February 2014, when they emerged 2-1 victors.

STATE OF PLAY

The Viola progressed to the round of 16 by overcoming Padova (a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Venuti and Callejon) and Udinese (a 1-0 win after extra time following Montiel’s goal) in the third and fourth rounds respectively. Fiorentina kept a clean sheet in their most recent Coppa Italia fixture: they haven’t done this for two successive matches in the competition since December 2012 (three consecutive clean sheets against Novara, Juve Stabia and Udinese).

Prandelli’s side are heading into the match on the back of a 1-0 victory over Cagliari (Dusan Vlahovic the goalscorer) in their last league fixture. Fiorentina currently sit on 18 points from 17 matches following four wins, six draws and seven defeats. They’ve scored 18 and conceded 23.

Dusan Vlahovic is the Viola’s top goalscorer with six. Following behind him is Gaetano Castrovilli, who has found the net four times and also provided an assist. Nikola Milenkovic is the player that has played the most minutes in all competitions: 1,650 in fact.

Inter, meanwhile drew 2-2 with Roma in the last Serie A encounter. The Nerazzurri currently have 37 points and, thanks to their 43-goal haul, the best attack in the league.
