A nine-goal thriller at the Olimpico during the 1998/99 season

MILAN – On Sunday, Inter and Roma will face off for the 175th time in Serie A. Ahead of the upcoming clash at the Olimpico, our ‘snapshots’ column will relive the game played between the Giallorossi and the Nerazzurri on 2 May 1999 through the photos taken that day. It was a spectacular and memorable affair where a total of nine goals were scored.

Indeed, at the end of the 1998/99 season, Inter ran out 5-4 winners in Rome in a match that had everything: Ronaldo’s feints; inspired individualism from Baggio, the provider of assists; Zamorano’s goals and Simeone’s grit. Inter took to the pitch in a 4-4-2 formation with Pagliuca between the sticks, Simic and Silvestre in the right and left full-back roles, and Bergomi and Colonnese in the centre of defence. Zanetti and Cauet, meanwhile, were selected on the wings, with Simeone and Baggio lining up in the middle of the park. Zamorano and Ronaldo led the Nerazzurri line.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock, latching on to Baggio’s wonderful through ball, gliding past Konsel and finding the net. The Nerazzurri No.10 registered another assist for Inter’s second shortly afterwards as Zamorano got on the scoresheet.  But following these excellent goals, Roma managed to respond through Totti from the penalty spot. The Nerazzurri then hit back themselves, with Zamorano scoring his second of the game: the Chilean did brilliantly to lift the ball over the goalkeeper with a delightful touch.

After the restart, Roma struck twice in the space of two minutes, levelling the match thanks to goals from Paulo Sergio and Delvecchio. There was more to come, however. First, Ronaldo restored Inter’s lead on the counter; then Di Francesco grabbed yet another equaliser. Finally, Baggio’s free kick was met by Simeone, who scored his 14th and final goal in a Nerazzurri shirt. It was Inter’s fifth of the game and one which secured victory.
