MILAN - Inter will return to the pitch at 15:00 CET on Sunday, when they’ll face Marco Giampaolo’s Torino at San Siro on matchday eight. Before the international break, the Granata managed to go two games without defeat after previously losing four and drawing one.
Ahead of the showdown, here are all the facts and figures that you need to know.
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS
Inter and Torino have met 152 times in Serie A, with the Nerazzurri’s record against the Granata reading as follows: 67 wins, 49 draws, 36 defeats.
Prior to their two victories against Torino last season (3-0 away and then 3-1 at home), Inter had failed to beat the Granata for five consecutive matches (D3, L2).
Inter and Torino have faced each other 76 times in Milan in the league. The Nerazzurri have won 39, drawn 26 and lost eleven of those encounters.
GENERAL STATSI
After netting the most headed goals last season, the Nerazzurri are continuing in the same vein this campaign: Conte’s men have scored more headers than any other side in the league so far (four). Only Marseille and Atletico Madrid (four) can boast at having had more players score at least one headed goal than Inter (three – Lautaro Martínez, D’Ambrosio and Perisic) in the Top Five European leagues in 2020/21.
Together with Atalanta, Torino have scored the most goals in the first 30 minutes of play in Serie A this season (six). This amounts to 50% of their total goals (six from twelve), the highest percentage in the league for that corresponding period. Taking into account the five major European leagues, Giampaolo’s team have lost the most points from winning positions (eleven).
Since their return to Serie A in 2012/13, Torino have lost just three of their eight matches against Inter at San Siro (W2, D3): in the same period, and only taking into account the teams who have remained in the division throughout, only Juventus (one) and Roma (two) have suffered fewer defeats against the Nerazzurri in Milan.
PLAYER FOCUS
Stefan de Vrij has scored two goals in three Serie A matches against Torino for Inter.
Ashley Young scored against Torino in his only previous encounter with the Granata in the Italian top flight. Taking into account both Serie A and the Premier League, only against Blackburn and Derby County has the Nerazzurri wing-back found the net in each of his first two appearances against a single side (when he was an Aston Villa player).
Romelu Lukaku managed to score in his first two appearances at home this season: the last Inter player to find the net in each of his first three Serie A fixtures at San Siro was Daniel Osvaldo in 2014/15.
Daniele Padelli played 100 matches for Torino in the Italian top flight. Danilo D’Ambrosio was also once on the Granata’s books: he took to the pitch 42 times for them between 2010 and 2014 (ten goals in 122 matches). Matteo Darmian, meanwhile, made 151 appearances for Torino from 2011 to 2015.
Belotti has scored four goals against Inter in Serie A, all of which came at San Siro (he netted the most recent last season). The Granata striker has bagged six of the twelve goals that Torino have scored so far, while he’s also provided two assists in the past seven league fixtures.
Torino defender Armano Izzo’s first goal in Serie A came against Inter in January 2015 while he was playing for Genoa. The same applies to Granata midfielder Soualiho Meité (August 2018).
COACHES
Antonio Conte has faced Torino six times as a coach in Serie A and has won on six occasions. His teams have scored 13 and conceded just once.
Conte and Giampaolo have come up against each other just once before, with the Nerazzurri Coach getting the better of his counterpart in the Derby last season.
