SNAPSHOTS | Distance is no problem for Stankovic
Legends
— Oct 23rd 2020The return of the segment that retells a historic clash before Saturday’s game at the Ferraris
On the eve of Genoa vs. Inter, almost all Nerazzurri fans will automatically think back to eleven years ago. On Saturday, we kick off at 18:00 CEST, but on 17 November 2009, the game was played in the evening. It was an all-Inter night at the Ferraris, one to remember especially for one of the most incredible goals in the history of the Club.
There was no need to spend an age trawling through the archives to find this one; Dejan Stankovic’s goal transcends time. The wonder strike came in the 45th minute of a game that was all but wrapped up thanks to goals from Cambiasso and Balotelli.
The snapshot that best tells the story of the Serb’s strike - on the volley, from the halfway line - does not included the goalscorer, yet it is that of Genoa ‘keeper Amelia, looking on in despair as the ball sails into the back of the net. A real stroke of genius from Stankovic, united with the unique and exceptional power that the Inter midfielder could generate on the football.
After that moment, the party started: the snapshots here follow Stankovic on the run towards the away fans. He is followed by Maicon, his teammates on the bench and José Mourinho: all of them electrified by a real gem of a goal.
It really was a timeless effort that would go on to be followed, that evening, by goals from Patrick Vieria and Maicon, for an unforgettable 5-0 win.
