MILAN – Wednesday’s match at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito will be the fourth time that Inter and Benevento have encountered each other. Inter have emerged victorious in each of the three previous meetings between the sides, winning twice in the 2017/18 campaign (Benevento’s first ever season in Serie A) and running out 6-2 winners at San Siro in the Coppa Italia in January 2019.
The Nerazzurri are set to play at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito for just the second time in their history. Their first visit to the stadium in Benevento came at the start of the 2017/18 season: on 1 October 2017, it finished Benevento 1-2 Inter on matchday seven in Serie A.
It was a difficult match for the Nerazzurri, with the home side performing very well. Inter’s opponents were aggressive and played on the front foot, resulting in a number of dangerous opportunities.
However, Marcelo Brozovic managed to take centre stage that day: much like his celebrations, his performance was most certainly “Epic”. First, he opened the scoring with a header from Candreva’s cross. Then, he struck a delightful free kick to double the Nerazzurri’s lead, a remake of the one that Julio Cruz scored in Juventus 1-3 Inter in 2003. Two goals in three minutes to decide the match, that despite Benevento’s admirable attempts to get back into it, with D'Alessandro pulling one back and then hitting the post.
There are a number of snapshots to savour from that game: the Croatian midfielder’s header, his celebration, the way he stepped up to take the free kick. We’ve compiled them all in our gallery, which you can view below.
