MILAN – Romelu Lukaku was named among the candidates for the best player in the 2019/20 Europa League season. The Inter striker, who ended the season with 34 goals from 51 appearances in all competitions, is one of three finalists chosen by a panel comprised of the coaches of all 48 clubs in the group stages and 55 journalists chosen by European Sports Media. The Belgian’s competitors are Bruno Fernandes, top scorer in the competition, and Ever Banega; the winner will be revealed on Saturday 2 October.
Inter’s top scorer of the 2019/20 season, Lukaku set a new record for scoring in consecutive UEFA Cup/Europa League games (11), beating Alan Shearer (eight with Newcastle in 2005).
Thanks to his total of 34 goals, the Belgian equalled Ronaldo’s record for goals in all competitions in a debut season with Inter (set in 1997/98). As well as being distinguished in Europe, the Nerarzzurri’s number 9 was also a potent force in Serie A with 23 goals, 15 of which he scored away from home - equalling the Inter record set by Istvan Nyers in 1949/50.
He scores and he assists. He and Lautaro Martinez scored 55 goals between them in all competitions last season, bested only by Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.
