MILAN - Ahead of the start of the 2020/21 season, with the players back to work on Monday 7 September and the Serie A Serie A fixture list being released yesterday, we’ll take a look at all the numbers form the season just gone.
DEFENCE
The solidity of the Inter defence was a key feature throughout the 2019/20 season. Only 36 goals conceded in 38 games saw Inter finish the season as Serie A’s best defence. They kept 18 clean sheets in all competitions, 14 in the league. Samir Handanovic stood in the Inter goal for a total of 4,585 minutes, making him the Inter player who played the most last season, ahead of Romelu Lukaku. Inter playing out from the back involved the whole team and, among the defenders, Stefan de Vrij stood out in terms of goals scored (four) and assists (five). The Dutch defender was chosen as Serie A’s best defender of the 2019/20 season.
MIDFIELD
Inter ended the Serie A season with an average of 54% possession and a passing accuracy of 85% - 16,211 successful passes of 19,047 attempted. Among the central midfielders, Marcelo Brozovic lead the way in terms of assists (nine in all competitions), which made the Croatian Inter’s top assist provider, alongside Sanchez. Underlining the team play of Conte’s side, 18 different Inter players scored in Serie A this season, 19 in all competitions./p>
ATTACK
Inter’s 113 goals from 54 games played in all competitions in 2019/20 is a new Club record since the Serie A became a round robin tournament (1929/30), beating the totals achieved in 2006/07 and 1950/51. The Nerazzurri scored 81 goals in Serie A, making them the second-best offence in the league. They also excelled in various other ways in Europe: for example, Inter scored 26 headed goals, more than any other side in Europe’s Top-5 leagues. The partnership between Lukaku and Lautaro was a particular cause for celebration; the pair scored 55 goals between them in 2019/20 in all competitions, only less than Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry (78).
