MILAN – Inter Women’s first season in Serie A ended prematurely with the definitive suspension of the league. This therefore gives us space to summarise the adventure of Attilio Sorbi’s girls in 2019/20.
Inter Women were in seventh place in Serie A when the league was called to a halt: 16 matches played, five wins, four draws and seven losses; with 20 goals scored and 27 conceded.
The Nerazzurre’s first, historic goal in Serie A was scored by Julie Debever against Hellas Verona on matchday one in a game that ended 2-2. Over the season, Sorbi called upon the services of a total of 24 players, five of whom were born in the 2000s.
Their first Serie A win, another historic occasion, came on 21 September 2019 when the Nerazzurre beat Empoli Women 1-0 thanks to Marinelli’s penalty.
As far as goal scoring is concerned, those 20 goals were scored by eight different players, with Gloria Marinelli the team’s top scorer with six goals, ahead of Stefania Tarenzi with five. Others to score multiple times were Regina Baresi (three) and Beatrice Melo (two), while Debever, Santi, Bartonova and Alborghetti all scored once.
In the 16 league matches played, only one Nerazzurre player played every single minute, starting every game and never being substituted, that was Anna Auvinen.
Sorbi’s team also managed to set a small record: they managed to keep six clean sheets, a record for a team that had just been promoted.
