An interview to retrace the steps of the Romanian project centre in Bucharest and the country’s evolution

BUCHAREST - A constant name in the world of social cooperation in support of urban poverty, Franco Aloisio is also our reference point for the project in the Romanian capital. Franco arrived in Romania with an Italian NGO at the end of the ‘90s after carrying out various missions around the world, starting his work with the Parada Association - which is set to become an Inter Campus partner - and then moving permanently to Bucharest in 2005.

“Since then a lot of things have changed in the country, which joined the European Union in 2007. Developments but also difficulties. The Inter Campus project centre in Bucharest was founded in 2012 after discussions with President Massimo Moratti and subsequent conversations with the President of the project, Carlotta Moratti. At the time of its foundation, the real problem was children on the street living in underground canals, but today, the city is home to a marked divide between the centre, operational and modern, and the suburbs, which have transformed into ghettos with huge social problems, areas which are increasingly difficult to access in order to help the children and families in need.

The original project centre in Bucharest has been working alongside Parada, running training sessions and tournaments for 42 children and providing them not only with their fundamental right to play, but also more than anything a chance to socialise and have fun, reinforcing their self-confidence and sense of identity. Inter Campus Bucharest also has the goal of opening a new project centre in the ghettos... a dream in the pipeline in light of the current health crisis, which has been contained by the immediate and strict lockdown implemented by the government. The dream, conceived by operations manager Christian Valerio together with Franco Aloisio, is still however very much alive, and will be ready to get up and running once we return to normality...”
