MILAN – Once again we’ll be delving back into the recent past with Inter Classics, our weekly Wednesday event in which we broadcast a full match on YouTube from Inter’s past chosen by you the fans. One of the protagonists from that game will accompany us on this Nerazzurri evening: we’ll be chatting live to Adriano, who will recall his feelings from the 2008/09 Derby that Inter won thanks in part to his goal!
Inter 2-1 AC Milan in February 2009. Matchday 24 of the 2008/09 season, with Inter already alone at the top of the table in José Mourinho’s first season as Nerazzurri manager. 1. Inter 53; 2. Juventus 46; 3. AC Milan 45 was how the table looked before the Derby, a match that could’ve shaken up the title race or pushed Inter one step closer.
Ibrahimovic and Adriano were the attacking duo that Mourinho had chosen for that very intense Derby, a game in which Inter were on the attack throughout the first half thanks to their overwhelming physical power. There was a flurry of chances, including one for Stankovic who was only denied by Ambrosini’s incredible last-ditch tackle. Then, on the half-hour mark, the Nerazzurri’s goal came: Maicon’s burst down the right was followed by a wicked ball in for Adriano who headed onto his arm and in past Abbiati. It was a special goal for the Brazilian, who celebrated by running towards Mourinho and giving him a heartfelt embrace: a gesture for the Coach’s son who had named Adriano as his favourite player. That was also a symbolic goal for him: it was to be the last of Adriano’s 74 goals for the Nerazzurri across his 177 appearances.
Inter’s lead was doubled just before the break thanks to the excellence of Dejan Stankovic: a long ball was played up to Ibrahimovic and the big Swede flicked it on for the Serbian, who rifled it past Abbiati. AC Milan reacted well after the break with Ronaldinho taking the game by the scruff of the neck and creating multiple chances, such as the one that freed Jankulovski to set up Pato and make it 2-1. The game reignited and Filippo Inzaghi, who came on as a sub, had a chance to make it 2-2, but was denied by Julio Cesar. ‘The Dreamcatcher’ would continue to deny the Rossoneri forward for the remainder of the match with a series of wonderful saves, including one in the 90th minute with his foot that sealed Inter’s victory.
