15 May 1966: Inter win tenth Scudetto

MILAN – This was a great Inter side, this was the Grande Inter. A team which had won two consecutive European Cups and were the reigning Italian champions. But in the 1965/66 season, Helenio Herrera’s side were knocked out of Europe by Real Madrid at the semi-final stage.

In the league, Inter were enjoying another excellent campaign despite the odd minor setback. After a defeat to Catania, the Nerazzurri responded in excellent fashion, winning six consecutive matches. It was a season where Giacinto Facchetti starred: he scored ten goals, a record for a defender at the time. This feat was only surpassed by Marco Materazzi in 2000/01, with the future Inter defender scoring twelve for Perugia.

Despite stuttering slightly towards the end of the campaign and thus giving hope to fellow title challengers Bologna and Napoli, Inter had the chance to secure the Scudetto title against Lazio on 15 May 1966. And that they did. In front of a full house at San Siro, Luis Suarez gave the Nerazzurri the lead with a great right-footed free kick. It was all action after the break: Renna equalised with 58 minutes on the clock before Inter responded through Sandro Mazzola, who celebrated in his typical iconic style, an own goal by Governato and Domenghini’s finish with his right foot.

Victory and jubilation. It was Inter’s second consecutive Scudetto and the tenth in the Club’s history. A star was about to be sewn on the team’s shirt.
