THE MATCH
Siena 1-2 Inter as the Nerazzurri became Italian Champions with five matchdays to spare following a dominant league season. With a long, great journey coming to a close, the Nerazzurri fans sat in front of their TVs and in the crowded stands of the Artemio Franchi Stadium in Siena were waiting for the finish line, their moment to rejoice joyfully. Manniger’s great performance made an already tough match even harder, but Materazzi’s determination and grit granted Inter the victory after his decisive double and great all-round performance. Inter lined up in Roberto Mancini’s usual 4-4-2: Julio Cesar was between the sticks, Maicon, Cordoba, Materazzi and Burdisso made up the back four, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Stankovic and Solari were in midfield, with Cruz and Ibrahimovic up top.
It took 18 minutes until the Nerazzurri took the lead after Maicon’s shot was saved and Materazzi poked home with his left foot to mark his seventh goal of the season. 180 seconds later, another defender scored as Paolo Negro equalised to make it 1-1, a scoreline that lasted until the 60th minute of the match, when time stopped. Matrix was focused, ready to take the penalty, Ayroldi blew his whistle, Stankovic couldn’t watch so looked at Cordoba instead, and soon after the Colombian ran to embrace him as Inter’s no.23 ran towards the fans in celebration. Half an hour later, the Nerazzurri’s 15th Scudetto was being celebrated on the pitch.
