The history of Juventus vs. Inter: 5 things you need to know

MILAN – This game needs no introduction. Juventus vs. Inter is, quite simply, the most played game in the history of the Italian League (level with Inter vs. Roma). In 1967 Gianni Brera coined the term the ‘Derby of Italy’ to describe the clash between these two teams from different cities and regions, two clubs between whom there has always been a sporting rivalry worthy of an inter-city derby.

THE FIRST ENCOUNTERS The first clash between Juventus and Inter dates back to 1909 in the First Division. It was 14 November in Turin and Juventus won 2-0 thanks to a Borel double. The result was avenged 14 days later, on 28 November 1909 at the Arena Civica in Milan after an Oscar Engler goal gave Inter their first win against Juventus; a victory that launched Inter’s journey towards a first Scudetto.

Sunday’s match at the Allianz Stadium between Conte and Sarri’s team will be played just 18 days after the 90th anniversary of the first Serie A round-robin match between Juventus and Inter which took place on 19 March 1930. That first historical clash saw the Nerazzurri win 2-1 thanks to goals from Giuseppe Meazza and Umberto Visentin.

TOP SCORERS There are three top scorers in the history of this fixture: Giuseppe Meazza, Omar Sivori and Roberto Boninsegna. Of the twelve goals scored by ‘Peppin’, ten came for Inter (including a wonderful hat-trick in the 4-0 of 1935) and two came for Juventus. Omar Sivori’s goal count is mainly made up of the six goals he scored in the infamous 9-1 on 10 June 1961 when Angelo Moratti and Helenio Herrera put out the Primavera team as an act of protest against the FIGC’s decision to replay the match originally given to Inter after a pitch invasion. Finally, Roberto Boninsegna scored nine goals for Inter and three for Juventus.

THE BIGGEST WIN The Bianconeri’s biggest victory was that 9-1 win against the young Nerazzurri side, a game in which a young Sandro Mazzola scored his first Inter goal. Whereas, Inter’s biggest win was the 6-0 result on 4 April 1954, a match in which Skoglund and Brighenti scored doubles and Armano and Nesti also netted. It was a resounding and historic victory that spurred Inter on to win the Scudetto one point ahead of Juventus.

THE SUPER CUP WIN IN TURIN Inter and Juventus have faced off three times in games with a trophy at stake. In 1959 and 1965 Juventus won the Coppa Italia, while in 2005 Roberto Mancini’s Inter won the Italian Super Cup in Turin after beating Juventus 1-0 in extra time thanks to Juan Sebastian Veron’s goal.

JUVENTUS’ FIRST DEFEAT AT THE STADIUM After its opening on 8 September 2011, the Bianconeri remained unbeaten at the Juventus Stadium (now the Allianz) for more than a year. However, on 3 November 2012, Andrea Stramaccioni’s Inter became the first team to win in the new Juventus Stadium: the final result was 3-1 after Milito’s double and Palacio’s late goal overcame Vidal’s opener.
