MILAN - The final, Bergomi’s wondergoal in our record-breaking Scudetto season, Emre’s cheeky chip, goals from Cambiasso and Materazzi and Vecino’s header. The story of Lazio vs. Inter in five chapters.
YOU HEAR LAZIO VS. INTER AND THINK ABOUT...
You hear Lazio vs. Inter and you think about Paris, about the third UEFA Cup in Inter’s history, about that evening on 6 May 1998, when Zanetti’s strike into the corner and that historic goal from Ronaldo capped off an unforgettable 90 minutes. Even for the man who opened the scoring after four minutes of play felt the same way, with Ivan Zamorano saying: “I’ll never forget anything about that evening: my goal at the start, the build-up to Zanetti’s goal, Ronaldo’s finish. It was a perfect evening and we brought home an incredible trophy. People still remember everything about it today with an incredible passion.”
OUR RECORD-BREAKING SCUDETTO AND BERGOMI’S GOAL
A match that was worth a trophy itself, which came after Inter had already secured their record-breaking Scudetto. The 3-1 win was started by Bergomi’s volley from the edge of the box, with Diaz’s double completing the comeback on the day.
EMRE’S CHEEKY CHIP
Another brace gifted us a 3-3 final result in the 2002/03 season. The Nerazzurri came back from three goals down on the day, starting with Couto’s own goal and finishing things off with a delightful double from Emre. Two sublime goals which combined elegance and power: his audacious chip to make it 3-2 and a rocket of a strike from distance to secure a point at full-time.
GOALS FROM THE DEFENCE
20 December 2006 saw Cambiasso and Materazzi steal the headlines, their goals that day ending a ten-year spell without a win at the Stadio Olimpico. Crespo set up Cambiasso’s opener before Materazzi headed home to secure the points, running over to kiss Figo’s boots for his free kick assist.
VECINO’S VITAL GOAL
Such an important goal in the recent history of this match-up, and it came from Matias Vecino on 20 May 2018. Brozovic knocked the corner into the middle and our Uruguayan did the rest, heading in with vigour to complete the Nerazzurri’s comeback and secure Champions League qualification for the 2018/19 season.
