Everything you need to know ahead of our Coppa Italia quarter-final

MILAN - Inter face Fiorentina at 20:45 CET on Wednesday 29 January at San Siro in the quarter-finals of this season’s Coppa Italia. The Nerazzurri beat Cagliari in the last round, while Iachini’s side came away with a shock win over Atalanta to progress.

Inter and Fiorentina have faced off twice in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals in the past, in 1960 and in 1967 with one win for either side. The last three Coppa Italia clashes between the two have seen just three goals scored, the Viola winning 1-0 in 1996 and the Nerazzurri with two 1-0 wins in 2010, Milito and Eto’o both scoring to take Inter through to the final as they won the trophy for the sixth time in Nerazzurri history.

PREVIOUS RESULTS AT SAN SIRO

Fiorentina have visited Inter five times at San Siro in the Coppa Italia: two wins for either side with one draw to complete the balance.

CURRENT FORM

Inter have scored eleven goals in their last three Coppa Italia fixtures: just one fewer than the Nerazzurri had scored in their previous nine games in the competition.

The Viola have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four games in all competitions: having kept the same amount in the 16 games before that.

GENERAL STATISTICS

No team in Serie A boasts more different goalscorers than Inter this season (15 in all competitions). With 16 so far, the Nerazzurri are also the side to have scored the most league goals in the first 30 minutes of games: eight of these scored by Lautaro Martínez.

Fiorentina (40%) and Inter (29%) were the two teams with the highest goal conversion rates from the Coppa Italia round of 16.

Inter have scored the most headers out of any team in the league this season with nine, including two in their last two games. Only Bologna (seven) have scored more goals resulting from corners than Inter and Fiorentina (six each) in Serie A this season.

PLAYER FOCUS

After scoring a brace on his debut in the competition, Romelu Lukaku has the chance to become the first Inter player to score more than two goals in one edition of the Coppa Italia since Marcelo Brozovic (three goals in 2015/16), Samuel Eto’o coming before him (five goals in 2010/11). The Belgian and Lautaro Martinez are two of just five players in Serie A to have already scored at least 15 goals across all competitions this season.

Borja Valero played 212 games in a Fiorentina shirt, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. The Spanish midfielder got himself on the scoresheet the last time he played against the Viola (in December 2019 in Serie A). Other players to have played for Fiorentina are Matias Vecino and Cristiano Biraghi, the latter making 75 appearances and scoring two goals for his former club.

Stefano Sensi has had an active involvement in both of his last two games against Fiorentina: a goal in December 2018 and an assist in April 2019, both for Sassuolo.

All six of Dusan Vlahovic’s goals this season (four in Serie A and two in the Coppa Italia) have come in the final 20 minutes of regular time.

Cutrone has an average of a goal every 85 minutes in the Coppa Italia (five goals from nine appearances in the competition).

Marco Benassi (13 appearances and one goal) and Dalbert (26 appearances and one goal that came in the Coppa Italia) both have a past in Nerazzurri colours.

COACHES

This is the first Coppa Italia encounter between Conte and Iachini as coaches. They have only faced each other once in Serie A with the Nerazzurri Coach coming out on top.
