The story of the match became clear early on. Barcelona controlled possession while Madonna’s side were organised and looked to hit them on the break. The first chance fell for the Nerazzurri with Oristanio opening up too much on his left foot as he missed the target. In the 42nd minute, Inter opened the scoring. Persyn played in a good cross from the right, Fonseca called the goalkeeper into action before Oristanio turned home the rebound.
Barcelona showed great character in the second half and went close to equalising in the 53rd and 57th minutes. First, Stankovic kept Gonzalez out before Mortimer hit the post. It was a very tight match at the Breda with the Nerazzurri defending tidily and playing on the break. In the 88th minute, a great chance fell for Inter with Vergani almost making it 2-0. In the 92nd minute, Kinkoue was the first to pounce on the ball from a corner and he turned home Inter’s second. After three more minutes, the whistle went and Inter won 2-0 against Barcelona to make the last 16!
