The country that has been represented most often is Mexico (6 times), followed by Brazil (5) and New Zealand (4). The two clubs with the most appearances (3) are Al Ahly from Egypt and Mexican team Pachuca, who have already been eliminated this year and will play for fifth place on 15 December.

Three wins apiece for Europe and South America

The six previous editions of the Club World Cup have seen Europe and South America share the spoils with three wins each. No other continent has had a team as world champions. South American teams (all Brazilian) won in 2000, 2005 and 2006, while Europe's three victories came in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (Italy, England and Spain). So far four finals have been decided in the 90 minutes, one in extra time and one after penalties.

Club World Cup (current format): first time for Inter, second for Benitez

The Nerazzurri are making their first appearance at the Club World Cup in its current format, though they took part in the Intercontinental Cup on two occasions, winning both times. In 1964 they got the better of Independiente: they lost the first game in Buenos Aires 0-1 and won the second in Milan 2-0 so the tie went to a play-off in Madrid, which Inter won 1-0 after extra time. In the 1965 final Inter faced Independiente once more, winning the first game 3-0 in Milan before holding out for a 0-0 draw in Argentina. Rafa Benitez is involved in the Club World Cup for the second time having coached Liverpool in 2005: the Reds beat Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa 3-0 in the semi-final but were then beaten 0-1 in the final by Sao Paulo.

15 December a good omen for Benitez

The semi-final between Liverpool and Deportivo Saprissa (3-0), which qualified Benitez's side for the 2005 final, was also played on 15 December. Peter Crouch was the hero that night as he netted a brace (3 and 58) while Gerrard got the other goal (32).

South Koreans: World Cup losers on 15 December

If 15 December is a lucky date for Rafa Benitez, then the opposite is true for South Korean teams: in 2009 Pohang Steelers lost their semi-final match against Estudiantes 1-2. Leandro Benitez scored two for the Argentinians (45 and 53) with the South Koreans' consolation coming from Denilson (71).

Seongnam the third South Korean side at the Club World Cup

Soengnam are the third South Korean club to have reached the Club World Cup. The first was Hyandai in 2006, who lost their quarter-final against Mexican outfit America before beating Auckland City 3-0 to win the match for fifth place. In 2009 Pohang Steelers overcame TP Mazembe 2-1 in the quarter-final, lost to Estudiantes 1-2 in the semi-final and then beat Atlante 4-3 on penalties in the third-place play-off after the game ended 1-1 following extra time. Including Senognam Ilhwa Chunma's quarter-win in this year's competition, the overall record of South Korean teams is currently 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats.

Panamanian referee Moreno

Roberto Moreno, born in Panama on 3 April 1970, is the referee for today's semi-final. He has been an international referee since 1996 and has officiated 12 times in CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers for Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010. He has also taken part 4 times in the Gold Cup (championship for North and Central American and Caribbean national sides) and once in the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 (Ivory Coast 4-2 Serbia in the group stage).
