Turkish referee Cakir

Cuneyt Cakir, born in Istanbul (Turkey) on 23 November 1976, has been an international referee since 2006. He will be taking charge of his 5th European game this season after Gent-Dynamo Kyiv 1-3 (Champions League qualifier), Sturm Graz-Juventus 1-2 (Europa League play-off), Rubin Kazan-Barcelona 1-1 and Chelsea-Spartak Moscow 4-1 (both Champions League group games). This is the first time Cakir will referee a game involving either Werder Bremen or Inter. He has been in charge of two previous competitive European games involving German teams and on both occasions the German side lost 2-1 away from home: Schalke 04 against Twente in 2008/09, and Hamburg against Fulham in 2009/10. This is his third time refereeing a game involving an Italian club. The previous two - both away games for the Italians - ended in a 1-2 win for Juventus over Sturm Graz in 2010/11 and a 3-2 defeat for Genoa by Valencia in 2009/10.

Thomas Schaaf

Thomas Schaaf was born in Mannheim (Germany) on 30 April 1961. Both his playing and coaching career are inextricably tied to Werder Bremen. He joined the club's youth academy at the age of 11 and worked his way through the ranks to become first-team coach on 10 May 1999, after playing 262 Bundesliga games and scoring 13 goals as a right-back. During his playing career he won 2 league titles, a Cup Winners' Cup, 2 German Cups and 2 German Super Cups. As a coach his record reads: 3 German Cups (1998/99, 2003/04 and 2008/09), a league title in 2003/04 and German Super Cups in 2006 and 2009 (though the last one is not considered a competitive match).

No more European football for Werder in 2010/11

Not only are Werder Bremen mathematically out of the Champions League, this game is also certain to be their last European game of the 2010/11 campaign because they have no chance of beating Twente to third place and thus qualifying for the Europa League. Even if Werder beat Inter and if Twente lost, the two teams would be tied on five points but the German side would lose out due to the head-to-head results: the Dutch side won 2-0 in Germany and drew 1-1 at home.

Inter have already qualified mathematically for the next round, but first place in the group is still at stake. For the Nerazzurri to run out winners they must finish with more points than Tottenham; if the two teams end level, the English side would win the group by virtue of their superior goal difference in the head-to-head games: 4-3 to Inter in Milan and 3-1 to Tottenham in London. Inter must therefore win and hope Tottenham do not; if they draw, Tottenham must lose.

Inter: only one game without a goal in 13 Champions League matches

Only on one occasion in the last 13 Champions League games have Inter failed to score: that happened on 28 April this year when they lost 1-0 away to Barcelona. In the other 12 games in that period, the Nerazzurri have scored 24 goals.

Eto'o after Adriano's record

With his goal against Tottenham (Tottenham 3-1 Inter) Samuel Eto’o made it 7 goals in 4 games in this season's Champions League. He is now just 3 goals away from Adriano's record of most goals scored in a single European Cup/Champions League season: the Brazilian netted 10 times in 2004/05.
