An accomplished and versatile defender whose skill at taking set pieces adds a valuable dimension to his game, Chivu joined Inter on a five-year deal from Roma during the 2007 summer transfer window.
Currently captain of the Romanian national team, he took part in Euro 2000 aged just 19. He collected his 50th international cap against Slovenia in August 2007 and led Romania at Euro 2008.
Chivu began his professional playing career at Romanian club side CSM Resita. He then played for Universitatea Craiova before completing a move to Dutch club Ajax, for whom he made over 100 appearances. After four seasons in Holland Chivu signed for Roma in 2003.
With Ajax the defender won an Eredivisie title, a Dutch Cup and a Dutch Super Cup, playing alongside his current team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He was part of the Roma side that beat Inter in the 2006/07 Coppa Italia final.
