APPIANO GENTILE - Part three of Roberto Mancini's press briefing ahead of Saturday's Serie A trip to Empoli:

Mancini: with the loan move of Alvaro Recoba to Torino, what do you have to do to get Adriano  back to being the great player he used to be?
"We don't need to do anything special compared to the past. We have always tried to get him back to his best but we can't do it by ourselves. Adri has to help himself, it also depends on him. A lot depends on his desire and what he wants to do, so we will see how these two important components go. But we certainly can't do it by ourselves."

But does Inter have true confidence in Adriano?
"Despite what someone wrote about us not even looking at each other during training, three or four days ago we spoke together for twenty minutes before the session. We spoke about important things, things said a long time before today - the last day of the transfer market, so it was well before we knew how things would end up. He knows what myself and the club think, he knows what the club has done for him and we know what he did for Inter when things were going well. As I said before, getting Adriano back to being the player he was two years ago, or between November and January last year doesn't just depend on us. A lot depends on him as well."

Could it be that he didn't understand Inter's intention to send him away on loan just to get him back to being the best Adriano?
"He cares for Inter a lot and wants to start doing well for Inter again. And this is an important motivation. And besides, we have never said we wanted to send him out on loan. We said we were looking for the best solution. If this was sending him away to play with tranquillity and continuity, it could have been an option. Otherwise, like we said the other day, if it's not the best solution or if he thinks it's not, we will continue to work like we always have."

How much would a possible exclusion of Adriano from the Champions League list affect the Brazilian's recovery?
"It could obviously have repercussions for him, but this goes for all the others. There are rules to be followed and we follow the rules. This possibility exists and we will take all the time we have to evaluate all the options and choose the one which will create the fewest problems for everyone. Such a decision would put Adri in a bit of difficulty because he wouldn't be able to play in the Champions League, but he would be able to work well in the week for the championship. However, we still haven't decided."

What was your reaction to Patrick Vieira's call-up to the French national team?
"Vieira is still not fit, he still hasn't played since he got hurt. They will have to look at his fitness later on."

Argentina have called up Nicolas Burdisso, Hernan Crespo and Javier Zanetti for a friendly in Australia. Will you assert your rights, as foreseen by the FIFA regulations, to keep one or all of them?
"I don't understand these things. They're crazy. I think it's absurd to call up players who played the Copa America and who have just fifteen days of work in their legs, and make them go round the world and back in eight to nine days."
